For the past 30 or 40 years, thermostats have been quite boring. Most are nothing more than a switch that opens
and closes as necessary to keep your home at a comfortable temperature. This is not at all what an Apple thermostat
is all about.
First the history: Apple (made by Nest) thermostats are actually not made by Apple or even branded by Apple but
are the only thermostat approved by Apple and sold in the Apple Store. Not only that, this learning thermostat was
designed by Tony Fadell who was the president of design for the iPod from 2001 to 2009. That is why we have named
it the "Apple Thermostat".
The actual inventor of the iPod brings us a new thermostat designed to learn our behavior patterns and manage
our heating and cooling systems to save us a lot of energy.
For example: Let's pretend every night at 10 PM you turn the heat down to 66o F and every morning you
turn the heat back up to 72o F. After as little as one week your new thermostat will do it for you
without anymore input from you. That is just the beginning.
The Apple thermostat is the fist "learning thermostat" that was designed to be user friendly. It is very
intuitive like an iPod. You do not need to be a computer geek to keep your home at a comfortable temperature. It is
also a wireless device giving you the ability to connect it to your home network. This allows you to control it
from a web browser on your computer, tablet or smartphone. The Apple thermostat can also be controlled by you via
an app on your iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad.
The Apple thermostat comes in a very attractive design as it looks almost like a retro dial type thermostat.
However it is nothing like an old type thermostat. It is more like an iPod than a thermostat. That is what makes it
When you take your Apple/Nest thermostat out of the box the first thing you will notice is the extremely
polished design. It looks and feels like any other product you would get from Apple. Even the packaging looks like
it was made by Apple.
In the box you will have the following:
- Installation instructions
- Instructional DVD
- Wall plate with all of the required connections (and a cool built in level)
- Mounting screws and wall anchors
- Screwdriver with all the bits required for installation
- Optional wall mounting kit (to cover existing holes)
The beauty of this system is that everything is included. There are even a few extra plates and adapters in the
wall mounting kit that fit existing electrical boxes or work for commercial installations.
On the front of the thermostat you will see a beautiful glass cover that looks much like a lens. The front part
of the thermostat rotates similar to an analogue thermostat. You can push the glass lense and it will click to make
selections while programming. The sides of the thermostat are designed to reflect the wall color almost making the
it appear to "float" on your wall. You will also notice the front of the thermostat has grates near the bottom.
These grates are there to allow the ambient temperature and humidity into the device. On the top front there are
even ambient light sensors as to allow it to become brighter or dimmer without any intervention. Inside the
thermostat there is a rechargeable lithium ion battery that is charged from your heating systems power source or a
usb cable. On the rear you will see a usb port and a connector to connect to your heating/cooling system. You
should need the usb port but it is there in case you need to install an update later or rapid charge the battery
All in all the Apple thermostat is revolitionary and can't really be compared to anything else on the market.
There is nothing else like an Apple (really made by Nest) thermostat...period.
